Product Description:

This popular Coplin staining jar has heavy glass walls and a broad base for increased stability. It holds 5 single 3” x 1” (75mm x 25 mm) slides vertically, or 10 slides back to back, and requires low reagent volume (approximately 65 mL). Manufactured from soda-lime glass. Approximate inside dimensions: 26mm L x 26mm W x 90mm D.

Coplin jars are suitable for various histology staining. Biological tissue has little inherent contrast in either the light or electron microscope making it very difficult to see differences in cell morphology. Staining is employed to give both contrast to the tissue as well as highlighting particular features of interest. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E stain) are the most commonly used stains in histology and histopathology. Hematoxylin a basic dye colors nuclei blue due to an affinity to nucleic acids in the cell nucleus, eosin an acidic dye colors the cytoplasm pink. Uranyl acetate and lead citrate are often used to give contrast to tissue samples when using an electron microscope. To see the tissue under a microscope, the sections are stained with one or more pigments. There are hundreds of various techniques which have been used to selectively stain cells and cellular components. Other compounds used to color tissue sections include Safranin, Oil Red O, Congo red, Fast Green FCF, Silver salts and numerous natural and artificial dyes that often originated from the dyes developed for the textile industry.
